How we adapt the curriculum and learning environment for children & young people with SEND

Most children and young people will have their special educational needs met in mainstream schools through good classroom practice. This is called Quality First Teaching (QFT).
You can find details of some of the approaches that we take to adapt the curriculum and make it more accessible for all pupils with SEND below (including children who are Looked After and have SEND):

Support for Literacy/English:
• Additional phonics interventions, RWI & NELI (EYFS)
• Additional 1:1 reading
• Use of Nessy programme: Reading, Writing & Spelling online intervention
• Handwriting interventions (as well as fine and gross motor interventions to support this)
• Pre and Post teaching of specific skills
• Bespoke reading and writing interventions on an individual child basis
• Use of technology, e.g. visualiser, ipads
• Small group teaching
• Additional support in lessons

Support with Numeracy/Mathematics:
• Pre and Post teaching of specific skills
• Same-day keep-up-catch up intervention
• Daily Maths’ Meetings to ensure regular revision of basic key skills and facts
• An adapted curriculum based on individualised needs
• Small group teaching
• Additional support in lessons

Support for children with physical needs:
• Utilising advice and recommendations from Occupational Therapy
• Use of aids in-class, e.g. writing slopes, move ‘n’ sit cushions etc
• Access to assistive software where needed
• Adapted/modified equipment and teaching materials (e.g. loop scissors)
• Provide a range of communication methods (digital camera, voice recorder, symbol cards).
• Use of visual supports
• Development of organisational skills
• Access to specific motor skills programmes

Support for children with speech, language and communication needs:
• Utilising advice and recommendations from Speech & Language Therapy
• Makaton/ PECS/Communication boards
• Lego Therapy
• Access to targeted small group work
• Access to intervention
• Access to speech language and communication support materials e.g. speech
link/language link resources

Support for children with a hearing, visual or multi-sensory impairment:
• Staff follow advice and recommendations from specialist teachers from the Sensory Team
• Sharing of advice on successful strategies and set targets, e.g. use of visual supports,
developing organisational skills
• Regulation objects, e.g. chew buddies, ear defenders, weighted blankets and cushions
• Provide a wide range of reading materials around a subject to facilitate inclusion
• ICT used to support with adapting/ accessing specific content or materials

Support for children with social, emotional and mental health difficulties:
• Utilising advice and recommendations from CAMHS (where appropriate)
• Use of social interventions, e.g. Getting Along Programme, Lego Therapy etc.
• Consultation with a wide range of agencies and partnerships to ensure the pastoral,
medical and social needs of SEND children are met
• Access the services of a specialist counsellor (who visits school on a weekly basis)

Support for children with medical needs:
• The school has a policy regarding the administration and managing of medicines on the school site.
• Parents need to contact the class teacher if medication is recommended by Health
Professionals to be taken during the school day and appropriate forms must be completed by parents/carers and staff.
• On a day to day basis Learning Support Assistants generally oversee the administration of any medicines.
• As a staff, we have regular training and updates of conditions and medication affecting individual children so that all staff are able to manage medical situations.
• School Nurse advice

Support for children with English as an Additional Language:
• Utilising advice and recommendations from specialists including Speech & Language
Therapy (where appropriate)
